Bye-Bye Florida

Now that winter is on its way out, we’ll soon be headed West. But here is a mishmash of memories from the past few weeks in Florida.

TROUT LAKE NATURE CENTER

Eustis, FL
Grandfather Oak, 275 years old
Rat snake named Stripey. Stripey used to be someone’s pet and was surrendered to the nature center when the owner could no longer care for her.
Black bear named Beardine. Beardine was unfortunately hit by a car and now stands at the nature center for educational purposes.
Can you spot the baby turtle? (center) The turtles and fish in the aquariums at the nature center come from Trout Lake. After living in the aquariums for a while so that visitors can view them up close, they are later released back to the lake.

DE SOTO NATIONAL MEMORIAL

Memorializing Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto. After pillaging gold from the Incas in Peru, de Soto came to Florida with the same intentions. He never found gold even after trekking as far north as Missouri and North Carolina, and died of fever. His possessions (including 300 pigs) were auctioned off to his crew.
