Bend & Volcanoes

The plan for this summer was to visit Alaska in the RV. But the Canadian border didn’t open until late in the season — too late — so we decided to spend most of the summer in Washington state since we hadn’t spent much time there before. On the way there from California/Arizona we spent some time in Oregon again, which is always great. This post is about Bend and the volcanoes of the Cascade Mts. that we visited. Next post will be about the Oregon coast. Then on to Washington.

REMEMBER BLOCKBUSTER??

The last operational Blockbuster is in Bend, Oregon. You can still rent movies there, but it seems like most of their revenue comes from selling merchandise to tourists (like us). Jeremy gets tons of comments on his “Be Kind, Rewind” T-shirt because it evokes so much nostalgia in most of us, who grew up visiting Blockbuster every Friday night.😄

KLAMATH FALLS

We went to Klamath Falls and walked to the original falls that the town was named for. They’re tiny, lol. They’ve deteriorated over the years, but apparently were never that large in the first place. So funny. You hear Klamath all over the place out there. The rapids look like they’d be fun to raft on.

CASCADE MOUNTAINS

The Cascades are a string of volcanoes (some considered active, some not) and mountains in the Pacific Northwest. An earthquake from the plates that cause the range could set off a tsunami on coastal areas at literally any time. Kinda nerve-wracking if you think about it. Guessing people generally don’t, lol. The mountains are beautiful.

Mt. Shasta
Mt. Bachelor
Crater Lake National Park. The lake was created by the eruption of Mt. Mazama.
Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Newberry is a crater caused by the eruption of Newberry Volcano, which is active. You can see more of the Cascades in the background.
We hiked Obsidian Flow, which is absolutely amazing. So much obsidian! We couldn’t believe it. When lava cools it turns into either obsidian (which is black and dense and has no air inside of it; it is brittle and about 75% similar in property to glass) or pumice (which is light and full of air).
A mix of pumice and obsidian.
Snow!
He-man lifting pumice, lol ❤️
You can see the tree line where the lava flow incinerated all vegetation beneath it.

BEND AREA

There are a lot of bunnies around. They look like domestics but they’re definitely wild. They were at multiple campgrounds we stayed at, even toward the coast. All different colors.
Gorgeous pines.
One of our campsites.
Same campsite but with our stuff.
A nuthatch or goldfinch🤔
